Fashion Wire Daily - LA When cancer activist/fundraiser Lilly Tartikoff calls, Hollywood answers. Tartikoff's latest call to arms in the war against cancer was the star-studded Louis Vuitton United Cancer Front Gala, held Monday night at a private estate in prestigious Holmby Hills.
Vuitton underwrote the entire event so that all funds raised could go directly into the UCF. And with tables going for $10,000-50,000, it was easy for the event to raise over a million dollars for cancer research.
Naturally, the stars turned out in droves: Jennifer Connelly and Salma Hayek, clad in elegant little black LV dresses, hosted along with the lovely Tartikoff. Co-host Renee Zellweger was reportedly stuck in London filming the Bridget Jones sequel. But both Connelly and Hayek brought their new blonde hunks Paul Bettany and Josh Lucas.
Spotted on the brown carpet: Russell Crowe, Chris Klein and Katie Holmes, Amber Valetta, Eve -- clad in an eye popping LV sequined mini with a sheer shirt -- West Wing's Janel Moloney and Rob Lowe, Rebecca de Mornay, Bill Paxton, Lauren Graham and beau Scott Fedro, Michael and Irina Medavoy, Rachel Weisz, Lara San Giacomo, Marilu Henner, Larry King with wife Shawn, Kenny G, Tiffany Thiessen, Jennifer Flavin and hubby Sly Stallone, who talked with pals about (what else?) boxing during the pre-dinner cocktail patio party.
The estate, formerly the family home of actor Gary Cooper, and redesigned by current owners David Bohnett and Tom Gregory, is a sprawling modern mansion with a museum worthy collection of 20th century technology and impressive artwork. The outdoor cocktail party featuring Wolfgang Puck's noshes and Dom Perignon was incredibly elegant. Then at 8pm, guests were gently ushered through enormous doors that looked like giant LV-initialed suitcases to climb sweeping steps covered with low-lying fog while white-cloaked divas sang arias.
The dinner was held inside a cavernous white building, built just for the event. Inside were white and gold chandeliers, white cloth-covered tables scrawled with gold scripted inspirational words and quotations from great writers such as Shakespeare and Baudelaire. After dinner, Seal rocked the house with several songs from his new album and some of his golden oldies like "A Kiss From a Rose."
But it was Tartikoff who wowed everyone with her nonstop drive and lifelong commitment.
"There is no way to prepare for those three words, 'You have cancer,'” Tartikoff said. "Twenty-two years ago, my husband Brandon was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. For him, taking the barrage of chemo drugs was just another challenge. But I never quite recovered from watching it (she rattled off the names of a dozen highly toxic ingredients) dripped into his veins. I knew there has to be something better. And thanks to Hollywood, this year we have been able to deliver the first non-toxic FDA approved treatment for breast cancer. Tonight Louis Vuitton has made it possible for us to continue and this time, we're going after all the body parts!"
After the applause died down, UCF head scientific director Dr. Dennis Slamon took the podium to talk about the next step in cancer research.
"For Lilly, success in one area is never enough. So now we will take on the entire cancer challenge. She is indomitable in her spirit and her commitment to this cause. To David and Tom, you have invited us into your home and you said yes to Lilly. God help you. You will never be left alone again. I can speak to that. And to Jennifer, Renee and Salma, God help you too. Lilly has your number and you will never be left alone until we are finished with this disease."
All three actresses designed charms on the white gold bracelet auctioned off after the dinner for $28,000. Connelly's is a lion on a blue enamel heart that says "Be Well" on the back. "My son Kai had the idea of putting an animal on a heart and we chose a lion to remind us to always be brave," Connelly said. "The words are our prayer."
Hayek came up with a charm dotted with yellow diamonds and a salamander on the back. "The salamander is a fascinating creature that symbolizes enduring courage that cannot be destroyed," Hayek explained. "When it loses a limb, it grows one back. Salamanders are inspirations for strength, hope and faith."
Zellweger's charm is a carousel horse with a white diamond on the saddle that symbolizes life and friendship. She went to Paris with her friend, publicist Nanci Ryder, who had just finished chemo for breast cancer. During a Vogue fashion shoot, Zellweger rode a carousel horse with Nanci laughing at her side, and the memory of that moment will always linger.
The charms will be sold at all Louis Vuitton boutiques around the world, with 15 percent going to the United Cancer Front.
